Favela Government
“How a street gang became a government”
Synopsis
Brazil's "Red Command" drug cartel is considered a plague by the government. But for the people of the favelas they control, Red Command *is* the government. They’re the de facto leadership of the area. The gang has taken over the role of the authorities in their shanty towns, where the state has long abandoned them. Away Days got special access to the Rio favelas, hanging out out with young foot-soldiers, speaking to commanders, and seeing how civilians live between the gangs and the equally violent police militias.

AWAY DAYS
Away Days is an episodic documentary series reporting from the global underground. We’re focused on hidden stories from the fringes of society, documenting counterculture in its rawest form. Independent journalism with no filter. Away Days is unapologetic. Journalist Jake Hanrahan, the host and creator of Away Days, and Jonny Pickup, the director of photography, have both spent the last decade embedded in places they shouldn’t be. With unique access, original stylised production, and straight forward on-the-ground reporting, we’re taking the viewer deep into the dirt without the usual airs and graces of legacy media. Away Days showcases what the mainstream can’t access. This is kitchen sink journalism for the next generation.
